The things people ask before trusting a plugin with their site.
On storage you choose: your own server, your Dropbox, your S3 bucket. The one exception is WP-AllBackup Storage, which is optional and off until you press Connect; if you use it, those archives are held for you on our servers in Germany, and we never open them. Our relay only brokers the connection handshake and holds nothing afterward. The privacy policy spells out both cases.
Shared hosting is the normal case here, not the exception. A large site is archived in parts, 400 MB each by default, and every part is a complete zip finished inside a single request with progress saved in between, so a host that cuts long requests short does not stop a backup. A restore works the same way, as many short requests rather than one long one. Every run writes a log you can read on the screen and mails it to you when it finishes, so if something on your host does get in the way you are told which step it was.
WordPress 6.2 or newer and PHP 8.0 or newer with the ZIP and zlib extensions, on the free build and the premium one alike. Beyond that: an account that can manage WordPress options, a folder PHP is allowed to write, and outbound HTTPS for the parts that talk to a cloud target or to your account. The guide lists all of it, including where to put the backup folder so the web server will not serve it.
Large ones, on ordinary hosting and through the browser. If a restore or migration is interrupted, for example by a page refresh or a lost connection, the plugin remembers where it stopped and offers Continue restore the next time you open it. Because archives are written in parts, the ceiling is the disk space you have rather than a timeout, and you can set the part size anywhere from 25 MB to 4 GB if your host is unusually strict or unusually generous. On premium, only what changed is copied after the first full backup, so a big site's nightly run stays small.
This is the honest weak spot of every WordPress schedule, and it is worth understanding. WordPress fires scheduled jobs through WP-Cron, which only runs when somebody asks for a page, so a site with no visitors can sit still. Two things cover it. When you save a policy the plugin waits for WP-Cron to actually fire and then says Verified, Waiting or Failed instead of assuming it worked. And if scheduled runs stop later, a watchdog emails you rather than leaving you to find out from a missing backup. On a quiet or firewalled site, set your host's cron to call WordPress cron regularly and the same check will confirm it.
Yes, and you hold the key. Archives are sealed on your own server before they leave it, so whatever ends up holding them, our managed storage included, holds something we cannot open. It is off until you switch it on, and switching it on shows a recovery key once. That key is the only way back into those archives, so keep it somewhere safe and out of email. Restores decrypt as they read, and a recovery key from another site can be added on this one to restore its backups here. The guide has the whole procedure.
